Definition of a Hold

A hold is a restriction placed on a student’s account that may limit access to certain academic services at Purdue University—such as registering for classes or obtaining official transcripts.

Holds are issued by various university departments or offices for a range of reasons.

How to View Holds

Navigate to Academic Profile and click on the "Holds" link in the top right corner. If a hold has been placed on your account, it will appear in a drop-down menu with details, including the office that issued the hold and how it may impact you—such as your ability to register for classes.  If you have questions or need assistance with resolving a hold, please contact the issuing office directly.

Standard Processing Holds

Students cannot change their curriculum if a hold is present on the record.

Holds for Financial Responsibility and Emergency Contact updates must be resolved each term in which a student is registered for courses. To release these holds, the required steps must be completed:

Ensure the emergency contact phone number is correctly entered. Incorrect phone number formatting is a common cause of errors.

  • The first box should contain a 3-digit U.S. area code
  • The second box should have a 7-digit phone number (no dashes, spaces, or special characters)
  • The third box is optional and should only be used for an extension, if applicable

You will not be allowed to register for classes until both holds are released.

Common Reasons for Holds

  • Nonpayment of library fines, parking tickets, and residence hall bills
  • Disciplinary action taken by the Office of the Dean of Students
  • Failure to meet immunization requirements

Suspended Students

  • These students may still request an academic transcript.
  • The hold will remain in effect until the suspension is removed by the Office of the Dean of Students.

Confirm Course Experience Location

This hold is placed when you are registered in a course that requires an off-campus experience completing a field experience, clinical hours, a practicum, or internship.

Reporting mandates require Purdue University to verify the physical location of the experience when taking such courses. If this is not completed within 30 days of your email notice a registration hold will be place on your account.

If you will be graduating at the end of the semester, a transcript hold will be placed on your account.

Please follow these instructions:

  1. Log into your myPurdue account.
  2. Click on the Academic tab.
  3. Under the Personal information menu, click on Confirm Course Experience Location.
  4. Enter the information for where you will be physically located while completing the off-campus requirements for the course. *If the information there is correct, please click Verify.

Please be sure to provide the address information for the location of the experience.

Example: you are living in Indiana but are commuting to Kentucky each day for the course experience. Please provide the Kentucky address.

Additionally, if you move or information regarding your courses changes, it is your responsibility to update this information.
